Deputy shot dead, seriously injured, gunman killed after motorcycle chase in Yucca Valley – Redlands Daily Facts

MPs attempting to stop a motorcyclist in the Yucca Valley on Monday engaged in a high-speed chase and shootout, with a deputy shot and hospitalized and the motorcyclist killed in the shooting.

San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon said in a video posted to Twitter Monday that MPs were on an additional patrol for off-road vehicle offenses when they spotted the motorcyclist near Paxton Road and Imperial Drive towards 2 p.m. and tried to stop him because there was no license plate on the motorcycle. The desert area is north of Highway 62 and west of Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms.

The biker fled on a motorcycle, leading MPs in a chase that ended near Dumosa Avenue and Sunnyslope Drive, where they found the abandoned motorcycle. The deputies approached the motorcycle, not realizing they were walking in an ambush.

“The biker (motorcycle) started shooting at the MPs who responded. One of our assistants was hit by the gunfire, ”McMahon said.

The deputies retaliated and killed the suspect. A handgun was recovered from the scene, McMahon said.

The injured MP, who was not immediately named, was then airlifted to a hospital, where he was reportedly in serious condition.

The sheriff’s department did not immediately release the name of the deceased suspect.
